What advice do you have for students who take Environmental Geology in a future semester?
Stay up with the material presented in class and put effort in on the on-line assignments. I would give the advice that they can not walk in there and think that it is an easy course. Any student also needs to be willing to put a lot of studying in for the tests and I would also advise that they use a studying aid such as notecards or a tutor. Don't ever give up! It may come across as dificult, but with a little hard work a good job can be done. Listen and learn, an take this class very serious because what you will learn in this class you will be confronted with done the road in life. check the Blackboard site regularly Get a fast start by being "over prepared" for the first test. Do not underestimate the challenge of the test. Definitely do NOT wait until the last minute to submit online assignments. Don't be afraid to speak up in class, because you WON'T be ridiculed even if what you point out is in error or only part of an answer. DO go to the extra links on the scheduled readings pages of the blackboard site because they do help with understanding the topics a lot! And don't rely just on the textbook information when it comes to studying for the tests... I'm not saying "Don't read the book," but the class notes really are the most valuable resource in understanding the course content and demonstrating that understanding on the exams. Be prepared for the tests and attend classes regularly. I did both and still had a hard time dealing with the tests. That the class is very useful and helpful. But do not take it if you think it is a scerw around, easy gen ed. Be prepared to work HARD! One thing I can think to tell them, is try and get to class you will understand it a lot better if you are there. One other thing would be to get to know your professor, he will help you out more than you think. One last thing would be take your time on the online assignments, remember you can always ask questions before they are due, so you don't mess them up like I did one of mine. Be prepared to use technology. This is a relatively "easy" course as long as you do the work and put the time into it. Make sure you find time for the assignments and DO NOT wait until the last minute. Get stuff in on time, do the work, attend class, and you'll do fine. Be sure to read the book. DO ONLINE ASSIGNMENTS!!! Get an early start on the net assignments and just really pay attention in class because the tests come mainly from lecture notes. You can't pass if you don't come to class! Future students should make sure that they set aside enough time(at least an hour) to do the on-line homework assignments. They are pretty involved and you need to be alert. Also, computers may be slow or down. Allow yourself time so you can get all the points. Write everything down and listen well. ATTEND EVERY CLASS!!!! TAKE NOTES!!!! STUDY!!!! Why miss a class that is so interesting. I took it at 8:00 in the morning and He never put me to sleep. Alot of things said, you would never think about. STUDY ! STUDY! STUDY ! People do very well that study Go to every class!! Take good notes!! Read the book. I also found it helpful to study with another person. These students should understand that they will need to put quite a bit of time into this class in order to earn a good grade and they will be rewarded in the end for the time they do spend studying. One of my biggest problems in respect to this class are the tests. They are reasonable tests, but I really psyched myself for the first half of the semester. I would study so hard and read so much that in the end it would be a jumbled mess. When the test came, I would either freeze or totally blank out. My advice would be to relax and be confident that if the you atttended all of the lectures, did the homework and had a handle on the information to trust yourself. If there is anything that is confusing or you just do not understand, just go ask Dr. King at during class, at the end of class, or privately in his office. That it is a helpful class. You learn a lot about what to do if in any situation of nature. very informative to put into use when buying any land or home. Make sure you know your material well for the tests, considering they are fill in the the blank. Take the course it will help you a lot if you plan on owning/buying/renting any property in the future. It also could offer you tools that can save your life in some instances. Take this course! It is probably the most applicable to everyday life. Read, and study! Be perpared to study and if you don't have time to do that, don't take the class. Go to class, and take the notes. Review the notes using a timely manner. If you do this, you will find that you will do extremely well in the class. Overall, a very good class! Sit towards the side that the professor writes on. I think that I would be lost if I sat on the other side of the room because I wouldn't be able to see the board I don't think. Honestly, I tell them that this course is hard, and if you don't want to do work, then avoid taking this class. uh... go to class, pay attention, take notes, and study. basically to just be astute. then it won't be too hard (but Dr. King pegged it, he is not gonna just give it out.. you gotta work....). Attend class or you won't do well. Try to learn as much as you can because this is information that could save you from making big mistakes in the future. Take your time on the blackboard excercises. They must know the internet, but the assignments were very self explanatory. They need to read the text and take good notes to study for the test, but the course was very interesting. study and take notes. By prepared to take a lot of notes, but enjoy yourself.You will learn a lot out of environmental geology, even if you are not a science major you will find this class exciting just like I did. Science my not be your favorite subject but give it a chance you can learn a real lot, escpecially when it comes to our environment. Think about this course in terms of the possibility that someday these events could affect you and then you will be more interested in learning the information. Dr. King may be tough, but he's fair. Take a little time at the end of each week to review your notes for that week's classes. Go to class. I know of students who do not and their grades show it greatly. Class is fun as well and very interesting. Rich with important information for life and test time which can not be discovered from the book. Come to every class. pay attention, take notes and go to class. plan to spend a lot of time on the computer.. more so than in class at times Make sure questions on homework are submitted long before the due date. It's an enjoyable course just make sure you show up to class. Don't take the 8:00AM.. :-) No, really, I would tell them to make sure that they hand in their assignments on time, and remember to do them, because they can kill your grade even if you do miss one -- and don't take Dr. King lightly when he says that the tests are difficult, because I have come close to failing two, when I thought that I knew the material pretty well. It is a very fun course. I enjoyed it alot. My only advice would be to go to class and study hard. go to class Always make sure you know what is going on. Don't fall behind, because it is pretty tough to catch back up. Future students should do the homework very carefully. The homework could help them get better grades on the tests. Even if they don't really like geology, the course touched on many other important aspects; you learn a lot of things you should know about buying a house. To stay on top of your material and to not be overwhelmed with the amount of information. Study! Don't just blow off the tests or wait until the last minute to do the homework. The tests aren't hard if you know the content. dont take it unless you are good in geology, because it is a lot of work for a 100 level course, and it can become confusing if you do not know a lot about geology you have to take good notes and do all the assingmemts , they help you understand the information better. I think this course and format is more suited for students who live on campus and have regular and consistent contact with both the internet and with other students. For students who are commuting from a significant distance, this course is more difficult. Come to as many lectures as possible. This course is by no means easy, but if you take notes and really understand what's going on, then it won't be nearly as difficult for you as it is for those who don't show up half of the time. Don't procrastinate DO the web assignments. You never will believe how much you actually learn from them. study all semester long. constantly review notes, don't wait until the night before a test. Use the web site to it's fullest potential!!!! For future students of this class my advice would be that it is fun, easy if you work hard, and that the book is not necessary to have to get good grades. Go to class, pay attention to the details, work hard, ask questions when you have them and you'll succeed. Study a little bit each day to prepare for the tests. I think a student should go to every class and not skip any classes at all. This would allow the student to have the lecture and understanding of the subject material instead of looking at a friends notes and get nothing out of them. I also think that a person should read the chapters of the book that are assigned when they are to be discussed in class. This would allow them to know the material for that class in head of time and it would allow them to recall the information that they read during the lecture. That in turn would allow them to recall information better for tests. I myself am not a science minded person; even though I put effort into it, the results are minimal. This course was good because it was not a typical science course- there was not a lot of scientific principles and formulas to memorize. The material involved learning some basic understanding of how our earth works, mixed with common sense. What we learned has application in life outside the classroom- maintaining a home, buying a home, surviving/avoiding natural disasters. I do not think I would ever split an atom in real life. Based on these reasons, I would reccomend this course to everyone, especially those who are not science majors, or science inclined. Make sure to reread the notes from every class after class to prepare you for the exams. There is sufficient information to keep in mind and sometimes it does get confusing. Forming a study group has helped me and I know that it has helped the people in my group also. You really need to know your stuff in order to do well in the class. STUDY! I would say to take really good notes (which means showing up to class)and recopying them as soon as possible. Study a little bit every day and keep up on the reading assignments. Above all, they should not be afraid to come to you for help. To show up at every class on time and to pay attention. Also read the book! Review your notes on a daily basis. Do not procrastinate on assignments. The students will learn a lot of critical information that can benifit them in their own lives. Take very good notes and always see when assignments are due. Don't take this course!!!!!! attend class and do the work Make sure to study well in advance. ALso, make sure to attend all the classes and do the assignment. Study in groups because that has helped me learn some of the topics. Keep up with reading and studying in class and go to class. Dont cram it all in in a couple of days. Also Learn to spell!!! As for KING, take good notes and keep looking them over periodically, with all the information that is given it's easy to lose track of stuff and not realize. You DO HAVE TO STUDY. Pay attention and learn a lot all information in this course is very useful for real-life situations. always pay attention cause it will help you out later in life like when you want to start a family and need to decide a good place to buy a house. this course will show you where a good place to build one and also a bad palce to build one pay attention in class access to a computer Pay attention in class, know how to spell all of thw words, and don't leave any blanks on the tests. Be willing to spend some time on a computer. Check Blackboard often so you don't miss assignments, like I did. STUDY, STUDY, STUDY! go to class and don't miss a beat Don't ever give up!
