TEXTBOOK READINGS:

  • Ground Water is Earth's most important water resource and is featured in Chapters 10 and 11 of your textbook. You should focus on the following sections:

    • Case History - Long Island, New York
    • 10.1 - Water: A Brief Global Perspective
    • 10.3 - Ground Water
    • 10.4 - Interactions between Surface Water and Ground Water
    • Case History - The Edwards Aquifer, Texas
    • 11.1 - An Overview of Water Pollution
    • 11.2 - Selected Water Pollutants

    • 11.6 - Wastewater Treatment

WORLD WIDE WEB READINGS:

  • Understanding Groundwater:   A website that provides basic information on ground water, the hydrologic cycle, water wells, ground water quality, and ground water flow. The site is a service of the University of Nebraska-Lincoln.

  • Water-Level Changes in the High Plains Aquifer:   A very brief, online case study of how the production of water through wells has changed water levels in the High Plains Aquifer. This site was prepared by the United States Geological Survey.
  • Florida Heat Pump:   This company would like to sell you a system to heat and cool your home. They use a novel approach that many scientists believe has great potential. Their website explains how ground water can be used as a heat source or heat sink for residential climate control.
