The San Andreas fault zone trends diagonally across this image from
northwest to southeast. It is one of the most active earthquake zones
on Earth and people have learned to respect if from hard experience.
The green and pink rectangular pattern in the northeast corner of the image is an agricultural area. It has been supported
by ground water resources for the past several decades. Here water has been withdrawn at a rate faster than it is replenished by rain and by ground water flow from adjacent lands. These resources are being heavily utilized instead of
