Tioga County Geologic Map The map below is a scanned portion from the Generalized Geologic Map of Pennsylvania published by the Pennsylvania Geological Survey. A geologic map uses colors to show which rock units are exposed at the surface. In Tioga County the Pottsville Group (shown in blue green with the symbol Pp) and Alleghey and Pottsville Groups, undivided (shown in green / blue dots with the symbol Pap) could contain coal seams of minable thickness. Any area on this map that is underlain by the Pottsville or the Allegheny Group could be above coal seams that have been mined in the past or which could be mined in the future. Caution should be exercised before buying real estate in these areas. If you are interested in buying real estate in the areas underlain by Pottsville or Allegheny Group rocks it would be a good idea to contact the Pennsylvania Geological Survey to see if they have any record of mining activity or minable coals in the area of interest. |
